AFCOM - Potomac |
Potomac ChapterA WORD FROM THE PRESIDENTAFCOM Potomac supports the states of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia for individuals who wish to learn about, participate in, and network with our local data center community. There are several ways to participate with our local AFCOM chapter – we typically have four meetings per year (one per quarter) and are always looking for help with our various committees that support these events. If you are interested, please send an email to me or Potomac@afcom.com. Additionally, we have engaged in an internship and scholarship program that we have run for the past 5 years. This program creates opportunities for undergraduate engineering students to gain exposure and contacts in the data center business. Our first student worked for the Potomac Chapter in summer (2018), we had three interns in 2019, two virtual interns and awarded two scholarships in 2020. In 2023, leveraging our relationship with Loudoun County Public Schools and NOVA Community College’s Datacenter Operations program, we secured opportunities for 20 interns. We will be continuing this annually to help introduce and hopefully drive more young adults into the data center space.. Current AFCOM members enjoy attendance to our chapter meetings where we discuss current issues, solutions, new technologies and new methodologies in the data center in addition to informal social networking events. Each summer we also host golf tournaments that typically sell out, so please join us! Our members support of these events fund our annual internship and scholarship programs and help us to expose new students to the data center business. Understanding that younger professionals, women and minority groups are underrepresented at the operations and technical levels in the critical infrastructure industry, we work relentlessly to help create pathways into our industry and as a result, make our organizations that much stronger for the customers we support. If you are currently not a member, we welcome you to come to a meeting and check us out or check out the Join AFCOM page for more information. We have a diverse group, and we can always learn from your experiences and knowledge. If you are a member of our chapter already, thank you for your support! On behalf of our AFCOM Potomac Board, we hope to serve you proudly. I look forward to connecting with you soon.
